About My Tabla Teaching

Biographical Information
Jonathan Dimond has been University-educated in the fields of Classical music, World music and Jazz/improvisation, with Bachelor and Graduate degrees from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Brisbane, Australia) and New England Conservatory (Boston, USA). Jonathan has also undergone vigorous training in tabla in India, under Sri Bharat Jangam (Pune). A professional university lecturer in music and a private instructor, Jonathan's multi-instrumental and diverse background allows him to teach in a wholistic and flexible manner. Jonathan has used the tabla in Classical Indian performances around Australia, Japan and the USA, as a soloist and accompanying voice, sarod, sitar, bansuri, santoor, harmonium, and with fusion jazz bands. His specialty is finding the nexus where composition, improvisation, jazz and Indian musics meet.

You can view a Quicktime movie of me playing tabla. Check out my other tabla resources on this web site.

Teaching Style
My gharana (or school) is a mixture of Dheli and Benares, as handed down by my teachers Jerry Leake (Boston, U.S.A.) and Shri Bharat Jangam (Pune, India). Both of my guru-jis are influenced by a wide variety of styles and play multiple instruments, like me.
You can read my full bio and find out more about my jazz-Indian fusion music at the links at the top of this web page.
Tabla lessons with me will cover:

* Learning to "groove" in a variety of rhythmic cycles (e.g. 16, 12, 10, 7, 6 beat talas.)
* Studying repertoire and performance of the masters of the instrument.
* Improvisation and development of personal style.
* Performance preparation.
