Loops – Improvisations And Compositions/EK! (Independent)
It’s tough to recall the last time a Brisbane outfit released
a double
album, but this is just what Loops have done.
Known for their technical ability resulting from years of concentrated study,
Loops don’t dumb down their compositions. Set in often-unfamiliar time
signatures, some of Loops’ repertoire will confront many a listener and
ask them to re-evaluate their impressions of contemporary music.
Again drawing on their interest in Indian music, EK! is at times a sparse listen
and it’s these passage that are most enjoyable (like the opening moments
of ‘Ek Bisleri’) as the trio seems to allow the compositions to
unfold in a very fluid and natural way.
John Parker’s processed and cut up work ‘Sitcom’ is another
sideline to these sessions and points another path to be followed by the group
in the future.
